Skin beauty tips : Summer skincare
Just like your wardrobe, your skincare regime needs to change with the seasons. During the hot summer months, your skin craves hydration and your best bet is a lightweight moisturizer.
Just like your wardrobe, your skincare regime needs to change with the seasons. During the hot summer months, your skin craves hydration and your best bet is a lightweight moisturizer.
If you have dry skin…
A climate that goes from one extreme to the other can really wreak havoc on your skin. The extreme cold and around-the-clock heating in winter leaves your skin craving a heavy cream that really penetrates. During the summer, however, all you need is a light, oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Opt for a cream infused with vitamin E and avoid essential oils, as they'll only cause unwanted shine.
If you have combination skin…
Heat and humidity got your skin looking and feeling oily? Opt for a gel moisturizer and get that shine under control!
If you have oily skin…
Skin can be both oily and dry, and there are several astringent products out there that moisturize all while keeping oil to a minimum. These products maximize hydration, reduce sebum production, control oil and minimize pores—they basically work wonders! And remember to use an oil-free sunscreen (the ones specially formulated for oily skin are amazing!) to prevent breakouts caused by exposure to the sun.
Pssst! Wash your face in the morning with a micellar solution tailored to your skin type—it'll help maintain your skin's balance.
Our top picks:
- Pure & Natural Moisturizing Day Care by Nivea (for combination skin)
- Aquasource Deep Moisture Gel by Biotherm (for normal to combination skin)
- Effaclar BB Blur Anti-Shine Unifier by La Roche-Posay
- Hydraphase UV Lotion SPF 30 by La Roche-Posay (for dry skin)
Skin beauty tips : Sunscreen: essential protection!
Get some safe sun this summer. Choose a sunscreen suited to your skin type to show off your tan while blocking out UV rays.
Get some safe sun this summer. Choose a sunscreen suited to your skin type to show off your tan while blocking out UV rays.
Sunscreen is indispensable to shield your skin from dangerous UV rays. Whether you have a light or dark complexion, a golden tan or suffered several sunburns in the past, you need to provide your skin with effective protection every time you go out in the sun.
1. Choose your sunscreen
SPF, or sun protection factor, allows you know how much time you can spend in the sun before your protected skin will burn.
Consult the table below to find out which SPF is recommended for your skin type and degree of exposure. For optimal protection, choose the highest recommended SPF.
SPF | Skin type | Exposure |
---|---|---|
60 | Very sensitive to the sun
| Extreme
|
45 | Sensitive to the sun
| Prolonged
|
30 | Normal
| Limited
|
15 | Dark skin
| Moderate
|
Do you need help determining your skin type? Visit your Jean Coutu cosmetics counter and ask for your cosmetician's advice.
2. Determine your specific needs
Sunscreens on the market offer a variety of properties to meet all specific needs:
- For children and babies over 6 months of age
- Hypoallergenic (for delicate skin)
- Water resistant (sunscreen stays on after swimming or heavy sweating)
- Non-comedogenic and non-greasy (for face)
- Scent-free
- Cream (for dry skin)
- Milk or gel (for a light finish, not as rich as a cream)
- Atomizer or spray (for easy and quick application)
- Balm (for lips)
- And much more!
Always look for wide-spectrum protection to shield your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Also favour photostable products as they remain effective even when exposed to intense heat.
3. Apply sunscreen as indicated
Unless applied correctly, even the sunscreen with the highest SPF will not be able to protect you from the sun. Carefully read the instructions on the label to ensure you are properly protected, and follow these simple rules:
- Apply generously and often!
- Apply 15 to 30 minutes before your first exposure to the sun.
- Repeat application every two hours.
- Apply sunscreen again after swimming or heavy sweating (even if the product is water resistant).
Tips
What do you do if in spite of your precautions, you get a sunburn? Apply an after-sun product on reddened skin. This will soothe irritation and restore its suppleness. Make sure to better plan your next outing in the sun: sunglasses, a large brimmed hat and easy-to-use sunscreen.
Have a great summer vacation!
Skin beauty tips : Skip the Surgery
Wrinkles start creeping up on us when we're as young as 25 and at 40 they're there to stay, becoming more and more visible with time. To avoid having to turn to rejuvenating procedures or plastic surgery, try these recommended skincare products.
Daily exposure to harsh elements means your face ages faster than the rest of your body. It is therefore essential to opt for an anti-aging cream or serum to help slow down the aging process, all while taking care to cleanse your face morning and night, protect it from harsh UV rays and adopt a proper daily skincare regime.
• Jean d'Estrées 3D-Rides Expert Filler Care, a gel-cream that minimizes and treats wrinkles (such as forehead "lion wrinkles") and fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Its active ingredients protect skin's collagen and elastic fibres, strengthening and reviving your skin. Amazingly, it also boasts a "Botox-like" effect, which helps to minimize muscular contractions.
• Lancôme's Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector, a serum that targets and corrects fine lines and wrinkles. It also minimizes the appearance of pores and acne scars by smoothing and strengthening skin and is an excellent alternative to hyaluronic acid injections, laser therapy and dermabrasion.
• Clarins' Super Restorative Serum helps replenish, repair and enhance all skin types. Perfect for instantly restoring your skin's vitality by evening out and defining your complexion. Ideal for mature skin prone to hormonal changes.
• Veld's Age Killer, a stimulating and extreme anti-aging serum that lifts and defines skin. In just one month, skin recovers its elasticity and tone.
Did you know?
In addition to an anti-aging cream or serum, you can cover up signs of aging and give your skin a more youthful, flawless appearance by applying a base foundation. For a matte or silky finish and to help cover up your skin's imperfections and minimize the appearance of pores and wrinkles, apply a base foundation alone or under your regular foundation. We recommend L'Oréal's Studio Secret Magic Perfecting Base or Lise Watier's Base Miracle Pore Minimizing Primer.

More and more women are daring to bare their natural beauty in makeup-less photos thanks to the growing phenomenon #wokeuplikethis. We have a few tips and tricks on how to "cheat" your way to flawless, effortless beauty!
Healthy skin
Healthy skin is the foundation to any makeup routine! It's important to adopt a healthy lifestyle, drinks lots of water and stock up on the right skincare products. Make sure to thoroughly clean your face before going to bed. Next, apply a serum to your entire face (this will help smooth your skin's texture) and a few dabs of revitalizing eye cream to the contours of your eyes.
Our pick: Idéalia Eye Contour Idealizer by Vichy
A flawless complexion
For a naturally flawless complexion, it's important to opt for a lightly tinted cream instead of a regular foundation. Next, use a corrector palette and brush to cover up dark spots and minor imperfections and apply a cream blush in natural pink to your cheekbones. Finally, set your makeup using a large brush and a thin layer of translucent powder.
Our picks: Mousse foundation by Personnelle Cosmetics + Corrector Palette (5 colours) by Personnelle Cosmetics + Cream Blush by Revlon + Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder in Translucent by NYC
Radiant eyes
For seemingly thicker lashes, apply black kohl liner across your upper eyelids—it's just as stunning as liquid liner! Next, brighten your look by applying white eyeliner to the inner corner of your eye. Finally, if you have brown hair and a light complexion, add a touch of brown mascara to your lashes.
Our picks: Kohl Duo Eyeliner by Annabelle + Dramatique Lash Booster Mascara by Lise Watier
Defined brows
Your brows frame your eyes so it's important to define them. Using a pencil or powder, fill your brows in, then add a luminous effect to your brow bone and inner eye with a natural finish highlighter. We love Annabelle's 2-in1 Brow Show Liner + Highlighter!
Our pick: Brow Show Liner + Highlighter by Annabelle
The finishing touch
The last step is to show off your kissably soft lips by applying a thin layer of lip balm (opt for lightly tinted or clear)!
