Beauty tips : Eye makeup and glasses 101

There's no question that corrective lenses alter the appearance of eyes—it doesn't matter if you're near or farsighted. Here are some tricks to tackle the problem with makeup.

If you're near-sighted, the concave lenses of your glasses will make your eyes appear smaller than they really are. That's why it's important to know how to make them really stand out. So forget about darker hues and favour instead neutral shades and eyeliners on the paler side. For example, you could use light blue Rimmel London Scandaleyes Kohl eyeliner on your upper eyelid and apply a nude hue to the inner lining of the eyes to enlarge their appearance. What's more, these pencils are waterproof and irreproachably smudge-proof.

If you're farsighted, your convex lenses will make your eyes appear unnaturally large. If you want to minimize their appearance, trace them with a dark liner like Midnight Black, Pure Espresso or Deep Sea Blue from L'Oréal's Color Riche Le Khôl line. Also pay special attention to the skin around your eyes, especially if you have dark circles, wrinkles or puffiness. Don't forget that some lenses can make imperfections look bigger, working much like a magnifying glass. To conceal these pesky blemishes, opt for Maybelline's Instant Age Rewind Eraser. Available in six neutral tones, the concealer stick evens skin, reducing the appearance of dark circles and bags under your eyes. You should also use matte eyeshadow since iridescent makeup can reflect light into your lenses. Your best bet: Lise Watier's Eyeshadow – Les Basiques Quartet with their faintly pinkish, neutral colours.

Did you know…?

  • Mascara is the perfect product when it comes to highlighting your eyes. Nonetheless, lashes may brush up against your lenses if you use a product that elongates them too much. To avoid such a snafu, use an eyelash curler before applying mascara or wear mascara that curls lashes like Lancôme's Hypnôse Doll Eyes.
  • Impeccable brows that are properly drawn and perfectly freed from stray hairs make your eye area shine. To give them the definition they deserve, there's Lise Watier's Double Definition Automatic Brow Liner. Don't forget—make sure the frames of your glasses don't hide your brows!
