Today's at-home hair dyes are much better quality than they used to be. By doing your own hair colouring, you can change styles quickly, easily and economically – and get beautiful colour, without compromising on quality. All you need to do is follow a few basic rules.
Allergy test
Before using any hair dye for the first time, it's very important to do an allergy test. Simply mix a small amount of product (hair colour peroxide) and apply it behind your ear. Follow the processing time instructions, rinse and wait 24 hours. This way, you'll easily see if your skin is reacting (eczema, hives, swelling). If any of these reactions occur, see an allergist before applying any more dye to your hair.
The ideal shade
It's important to choose the right shade and the right type of hair dye. To do this, you first need to assess your hair's condition with the help of a cosmetician (amount of white hair, colour of roots and ends, etc.).
Then you can choose the colour that's best for you: platinum blonde, brown with copper tones, chocolate brown… the choices are endless! If you're hesitating between two shades, choose the lighter one. It's always easier to darken your hair with the next hair dye treatment you do than to lighten it. If your hair is very long or thick, get a second box of hair colour.
Read the instructions carefully
Read the directions for use and follow them very precisely. To get the right shade, it's vital you follow the processing time and product mixture quantities.
Tools required
First, slip on an old shirt and pick a towel you can dedicate solely for this purpose. Mix the ingredients in the bottle or bowl provided in the box. It's also very important to wear gloves, if you want to avoid having stained hands for several days.
Application
Before starting, take a few seconds to put some petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) on your ears and near the roots on your forehead and neck. Mix the ingredients, if need be, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Separate your hair into four equal parts (from the middle of the forehead down to the middle of your lower neck and from one ear to the other). Start by colouring the back of your head to avoid the front getting too dark. Apply the hair dye to your roots first, finishing with the ends. Make sure the colour is spread evenly and reapply the product on any strands you've missed. Don't be shy to ask someone for help!
Rinsing
It's important to rinse well in order to get all the product out of your hair. You'll know when all the dye is rinsed out when the water in the sink becomes clear. Apply the conditioner provided in your hair dye kit. To make your hair colour last as long as possible, use a shampoo or conditioner formulated for colour-treated hair.
